McKean County

McKean County, located in the northwest portion of Pennsylvania, was formed from Lycoming County in 1804.  The county was named in honor of Pennsylvania Governor Thomas McKean, also well-known for being a signer of the Declaration of Independence.  The county seat is Smethport, and the county claims the honor of being home of “The Zippo Lighter” and brags that it is “The Black Cherry Capital of the World.”

Seated along the border with New York and just a 90-mile drive from Peace Bridge, which offers entrance to Canada, McKean County was founded in no small part due to its abundant natural resources of oil and timber.  Today, those rich natural resources still contribute significantly to the area’s economy.  A successful university, a top-notch rural medical center, and various manufacturing companies also add to the economic opportunities in McKean County

Many Pennsylvania lawyers located in McKean County practice various branches of Pennsylvania law, ranging from bankruptcy law, employment law, personal injury law, immigration law, and family law, to medical malpractice law, workers compensation law, and even criminal law.  Criminal law is typically more serious than civil law and involves potential jail time.  Criminal offenses are broken up into two basic types:  felonies–more serious crimes which have harsher penalties–and misdemeanors–smaller offenses with much less serious punishments.  No matter which type of criminal offense you face, hiring an experienced Pennsylvania lawyer to represent you is definitely a good idea.

McKean County residents often hire the services of Pennsylvania lawyers to defend them in trials involving DUI (driving under the influence).  Pennsylvania lawyers usually refer to DUI cases in various ways:  drunk driving, driving under the influence (DUI), driving while impaired (DWI), or one of the more recent terms, driving after imbibing (DAI).  An experienced Pennsylvania lawyer can prove invaluable when it comes time to defend such a case, since they have the expertise necessary to navigate the complexities of this type of law.

Being arrested for violating Pennsylvania laws governing drunk driving will bring about not just one case, but two.  In the court proceedings, the accused defendant faces a wide array of possible consequences, among them financial penalties, mandatory alcohol education programs, loss of driving privileges, and even jail time.  Additionally, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDot) will initiate separate proceedings to revoke the driver’s license.

Pennsylvania law provides for four types of incorporated municipalities:  cities, boroughs, townships, and, rarer cases, towns.  Below are listed the cities, boroughs and townships located in McKean County:
